The Solheim Cup is the biggest event in women’s golf and one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated sporting events on the global calendar. It combines the tradition and prestige of the game of golf with passion for one’s country and continent.

This biennial, transatlantic team match-play competition features the 12 best European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the 12 best U.S. players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most highly coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition; some of the most memorable moments in the sport have happened during past Solheim Cups.

With the inaugural match played at Lake Nona, Florida in 1990, The Solheim Cup was established to showcase the talent of the world’s preeminent female golfers in a format that mirrored The Ryder Cup. The Solheim Cup is named after Karsten Solheim, golf club designer and famously known as the founder of the PING putter.

The last duel was played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia in September 2024, and the next edition will be played at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, from September 7-13, 2026, for the first time in history.

HOW IT WORKS

Situated in the heart of Brabant, Bernardus is a modern 18-hole heathland course designed by American golf course architect Kyle Phillips in 2018. Shortly after its opening, the course was selected to host 3 editions of the KLM Open (a DP World Tour event) and was also chosen as the upcoming 2026 Solheim Cup venue.

The architect behind Kingsbarns, The Grove and Yas Links, also codesigner of the Lage Vuursche Golf course near Utrecht, has designed another masterpiece combining the balance between what the players want and what nature demands. Built on sandy terrain with transplanted mature heather to give a unique heathland feel, the design of the course is absolutely stunning. The numerous ragged-edged fairway and greenside bunkers are laid-out beautifully and the tricky water hazards seamlessly blend in with the background of dunes, heath and gorse. Water comes into play on several occasions throughout the round, most notably on the front 9 on the 2nd, 7th and 8th hole and at the end of the round on the 17th and 18th. Although the property feels tight with parallel holes going back and forth, the course is a tough characterful championship layout and will require the best shots you’ve got, using all of your clubs.
