Some of the best European golf courses are not open to the public and require a membership in order to access the facilities and play the courses. Most golf courses in Europe require the proof of an handicap. Although they may not ask for it, we highly recommend to have this certificate in your bag. Take a picture of it as well so you have it when needed.

“In order to establish and maintain a Handicap Index, a player must be a member of an authorized golf club. Most golf clubs, public and private, are authorized. The Allied Golf Association in your area can easily set you up with clubs in your area and you can also search for an authorized club” on the USGA website, here.

European golf courses boast deeper and smaller bunkers than courses in the US in general. There are called potbunkers. Rough is also ticker and greens tend to be faster than usual. In Europe, you will find more slopping greens than anywhere else. You could try and put opposite to the hole, and still make it.

Generally speaking, golf facilities in Europe are more rustic than in the US. Rustic means charming, authentic, historic, friendly and a proper golfers’ atmosphere. You may not find a hairdryer in the ladies locker rooms, but oh well…the fact that you are in such a unique, old clubhouse with character is such a rewarding experience in itself. Look at the big picture and find the charms of the clubhouse all around. Modern facilities can usually be found in resorts or resort towns.

Bag drop areas are much less common in Europe than in the US.

Most courses in Europe do not have beverage cart attendants driving around the course, so please be prepared and take drinks and snacks before you hit the first tee. They usually have a turn though – either at the clubhouse or a small cabin.

More so in Europe than in the UK, the 19th hole is a tradition you cannot avoid. This is a silent rule all golfers should know about. Sit down and have a drink.

Non golfers are often allowed to walk the course, but there are a few exceptions. Some courses in the UK are completely against it. In fact, we have seen signs with “no dogs or women allowed” – we won’t name the clubs (and there are several), but wow. Non golfers should be mindful and understand the rules of golf before entering a traditional and historic golf club. It is also good to ask when you don’t know.
